for everyone

If it's not broke, don't fix it. At least that's what they say... but why is it that companies feel that in order to be successful that they have to keep changing their products. "New" and "Improved" is viewed as marketing magic. Innovation, the key to success. Not necessarily.

While improvements are sometimes welcome, often times a good thing is a good thing as is and shouldn't be messed with. Back when they tried to change Coca Cola with "new" Coke, it bombed. No one wanted the new stuff. Who wanted Coke that tasted too sweet like Pepsi, Coke buyers wanted Coke! How many other "standards" have been messed with, only to have the glorified product meet with abject disapproval causing consumers to moan and whine loudly for the return of their old favorite?

So why I'm I complaining, why is this on my mind today? DUNKIN DONUTS MESSED WITH MY ICED COFFEE!!! Every summer (once I got over the idea that my coffee had to be hot), I get cravings for a nice large Dunkin Donuts iced decaf with cream and two Sweet n' Lows. Sometimes after a particularly hot workout at the gym, I head there directly after my workout and grab one, bring it home and toss a scoop of whey protein in - the perfect post-workout recovery treat. Imagine my disgust when I got one the other night and ... ewww... it might as well have been Starbucks, it was so bitter. I thought they made a mistake and just dumped the darned thing out. When it happened again today, I thought, "Uh-oh, something is up with this." That's when my daughter told me... Dunkin Donuts climbed on the "new and improved" bandwagon.

When you go to their website and click on "Featured Products" then on "Iced Coffee" they now proudly proclaim that "At Dunkin’ Donuts, the Iced Coffee leaders, we double brew* our Iced Coffee so it keeps it rich flavor… AND KEEPS YOU GOING all summer long. *What is double brewing? We double the amount of coffee beans we use when brewing our Iced Coffee to compensate for the ice. This guarantees our Iced Coffee is always full of flavor and never watered down."

Well, I liked it when it was watered down byt that melting ice. Oh, I got annoyed when the stupid workers didn't stir the cream in and left it or the Sweet n' Low down at the bottom. If I'd sneak a sip or two before I got home to to throw the whey in, I'd get a mouthful of saccharin. I could deal with that just fine... but it doesn't even taste the same anymore. ICK. YUK. BLECH.

I guess for the rest of the summer I'll be putting on a pot of decaf before I go to the gym, letting it sit to cool off while I workout, then making my own dang iced coffee. It won't be the same, but at least I won't be paying for that SWILL. And even in the midst of a chaotic morning, I managed to fire off a product complaint and tell them it sucks...and call the toll-free number and tell them that it is now "EW! Gross!"

My poor father's bridge came out, right before a holiday week when every dentist in town (including his dentist) is taking a long weekend and vacation. I had to call a dozen dentists this morning before I found one that could see him today and cement that bugger back in there.

My sister, who didn't feel I had enough time for her and made all sorts of declarations about "ending the hypocrisy of pretending we have a relationship," needed me. She needed me badly to do some things for her. Now I'm back in her good graces because...well...I didn't react the way she would've reacted, I did what she needed me to do. For a season, there is peace in the neighborhood. :)
